The WPM "Kalevala" is located in the Republic of Karelia in the northwest of Russia. Karelia boarders with Finland in the west and is a transit territory between Russian regions and European countries. Karelia is the forest region, which allows developing added-value wood processing. Karelian forests are reach in softwood trees, which timber is used in woodworking industry. The WPM “Kalevala” was the first plant to deal with OSB production in Russia. The first stage of the plant was launched in June 2013. Currently, the plant is one of the main manufactures working in the field of continuous OSB production and its estimated capacity at the launch of the first stage amounts to 300 thousand m³ per year. The German company «Siempelkamp» was in charge of equipment delivery and contract supervision. The company is a leader in the international market of equipment delivery for production of wood and board materials.
OSB stands for Oriented Strand Board, material produced by pressing flat softwood strands with the use of nonhazardous binding substance. Oriented strand board manufacturing of pressing with high temperature and pressure. A board consists of three layers. Each strand is oriented parallel to the other and perpendicular to strands in neighbor layers. Strand thickness 0,65-1,0 mm, width – 5-50 mm, length – 75-125 mm. Size, shape and orientation of strands in separate layers let achieve best physical mechanical properties of the boards. Such a flat strand orientation results in getting construction material with high flexing resistance and resilience along major board axis. Softwood trees growing in northern Russian regions are used to manufacture OSB boards. Their wood is characterized by high-density and quite high resin content providing the long-lasting durability of Kalevala OSB products. pMDI resins is used as adhesive both for outer and inner layers. It allows manufacturing of emission E0 grade OSB boards. Owing to modern and high-technology equipment, the mill produces boards of various types and sizes including rabbeted ones (“tongue-and-groove» system). The characteristics of the products comply with the European standard ЕN-300-2006 («Oriented Strand Boards (OSB) - Definitions, classification and specifications»). The enterprise passed the certification test under FSC system for compliance with the standards of FSC-STD-40-004 “Standard for Chain of Custody Certification” and FSC-STD-40-005 “Standard for Company Evaluation of FSC Controlled Wood”. In 2017 The WPM “Kalevala” received the certificate of the management quality system conformity with the requirements of EN ISO 9001-2015 international standard.
