'Living with Fire – Addressing Global Change through Integrated Fire Management' - Sun City, South Africa, 9-13 May 2011

The 5th International Wildland Fire Conference will provide a platform to bring together members of the fire community-of-practice who strive to promote learning and innovation, share practices and lessons common to sustainable use of the environment, wildland fire risk management and disaster reduction at local, national, regional and global scales.
The conference will be conducted under the auspices of the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) as well as the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and convened by the regional Sub-Saharan Wildland Fire Network, AfriFireNet.
The Conference Programme is arranged around the theme “Living with Fire – Addressing Global Change through Integrated Fire Management”. Contributions for papers of 15 minutes or posters that address one of the following themes, are most welcome:

• Adapting to climate change: Integrated Fire Management in the post-Kyoto period
• Fire management and carbon management innovations
• Community fire awareness, prevention and survival – revisiting Stay or Go • Resource Sharing and Co-ordination
• Best practices and new technologies in fire detection and suppression
• Recent advances in fire science and fire management applications
• Developing future leaders and Leadership Programmes
• Using fire to sustain ecosystem services in fire adapted environments • Mitigation, wildfire risk reduction and vulnerability
• Integrated Fire Management and poverty alleviation in developing countries
• Institutionalizing application of the Incident Command System
• International exchange and assistance programmes and protocols The presentations, exhibitions and insights offered by international professionals and experienced fire management personnel will appeal not only to fire and disaster risk management specialists, scientists and practitioners, but also to students, the conservation, commercial forestry and agriculture sectors, community leaders, policy and decision-makers.

Registration fee for delegates: Euro 320. This entitles delegates to attend all sessions, the welcome reception, the “valley of the waves” dinner, daily teas and lunches and entrance to the exhibition.
Additional extras, such as the exciting field day at the neighbouring Pilanesberg National Park, are outlined on the website.
