Peter Whitfield, chair of Confor new technical committee
ConFor has established a Safety, Technical and Compliance Committee to represent member businesses across the UK. The new committee will deal with a range of issues, in particular around harvesting.
“It is important that businesses are able to work together to deal with a range of important issues, such as health and safety, first aid and certification”, said Peter Whitfield, chair of the new committee. “These issues can have a significant impact on business operations and a strong, unified voice is required to ensure that the sector’s interests are effectively represented”.
The new committee will embrace businesses large and small, with representation from harvesting, management and milling enterprises.
“We have responded to a strong desire from many ConFor members to establish this committee”, said ConFor chief executive Stuart Goodall. “Peter will be an excellent chair and there is a strong team of people participating on the committee from a range of member businesses.
“ConFor continues to go from strength to strength and establishing this committee is another step in the process of ensuring that it provides an increasingly effective service for businesses in the forestry and wood industry.”
The new committee will co-ordinate businesses in the sector, seeking both to respond to technical developments and to be proactive in dealing with arising issues. In its work, it will engage with a range of organisations such as the Forestry Commission, the Health and Safety Executive and certification bodies.
The first meeting of the committee took place on 10 June 2010.
